Session 3: Sensing the Urban Call, cont.
III.  To Hear:

Rev. Gabriel Salguero, pastor of The Lambs, New York City, preached a sermon at the Bronx Bethany Church of the Nazarene (in mp3 format) on the challenge of multicultural ministry, and the calling of both Jonah and Peter in their confrontations with Joppa. This sermon is an hour long, and is given in both Spanish and English. In this sermon, we are confronted with our prejudices, ignorance, and God’s calling to reach across cultural divides. The sermon is entitled “Joppa—A Shifting in Mission.”

IV.  To Read:

  • Read chapters 5--6 of your Bakke text to learn how to engage your city. The call to ministry in the City may result from exposing oneself to the issues and needs of the City. Unfortunately, the tendency of a lot of ministries is to look no further than the four walls of a local church. Bakke reminds us our ministry is to needy people, and the concentration of them in the City, itself, may impel us to recognize the call.

  • Read the materials on “Misguided Motives” (Tink) and ask yourself if your sense of calling is corrupted by false conceptions or misguided motives in engaging in ministry in the City. Then ask yourself two questions:

    • What must I do to cleanse and clarify my motivations, so I know my calling is indeed of the Lord?
    • Despite my corrupted motivations, can Jesus use me, despite “me” (think of what He did with the twelve disciples who themselves had very mixed and impure motives for following Jesus into the City)?

  • Read the written version of Rev. Gabriel Salguero’s sermon, “Joppa—A Shifting in Mission.” It is quite different from the oral presentation, as it develops the theology more completely. How is preaching in an African-American church in New York City different from reading a manuscript written for a more national audience?
